Assembling an estate tax return
Assembling Form M706 for submission to the Minnesota Department of RevenueWhen sending estate tax returns (Form M706 and the complete federal Form 706) to the Minnesota Department of Revenue, do not use:- Bindings
- Staples
- Colored paper as separators
- Index tabs (are useful but not necessary)
When the return is received in the Estate Tax Office, the staples, binding, etc. must be removed before initial process even begins. Breaking down a return that is bound often results in torn pages. The end result is the return has to be photocopied (Xeroxed) for our imaging machine. The preferred way to bind the estate tax return sent to Department of Revenue is to use binder clips. Three-ring binders and the old fashioned two-prong fasteners are also acceptable. Documents MAY be sent to us printed double-sided. Alternate methodPrint Form M706, federal Form 706 (the first three pages), death certificate and index page listing documents. Using the PDF format: save all the schedules and attachments to the CD. Label the CD with the following information:- Decedent’s last name, first name, middle initial
- Decedent’s date of death
- Social Security number (last four digits ONLY)
Death certificates may be photocopied; we do not need the original. However, the department reserves the right to request an original. Note: Do not copy death certificates on security paper. If you use security paper when copying, only the word VOID appears. A photocopy is not acceptable in this case.If the power of attorney (POA) box is not checked on the front page of the return, we cannot discuss any issues with the POA (if any, that is listed on page 2 of Form M706). The decedent’s representative will then need to fill out Form REV184, Power of Attorney, and mail it to the Estate Tax Office of the Minnesota Department of Revenue. This may slow the exchange of information concerning the estate tax return.
